Licensed Mental Health Counselor

What you do:

  • Counsel and advise patients with their mental health needs, including children, families, and those with behavioral disorders to promote optimum mental and emotional health
  • Evaluate clients’ mental condition, then develop and implement treatment plans based on clinical experience and knowledge
  • Act as a client advocate to coordinate required services or to resolve emergency problems in crisis situation

What does it take to become a licensed mental health counselor?

High school diploma or equivalent

College degree

What level? A Master’s or Doctoral degree in mental health counseling or related behavioral science field from an approved school related field.

Training/Supervised hours

How many hours? Minimum of 36 months of full-time counseling or 3,000 hours of postgraduate supervised experience in an approved setting.
