Licensed Mental Health Counselor

What you do:

Counsel and advise patients with their mental health needs, including children, families, and those with behavioral disorders to promote optimum mental and emotional health
Evaluate clients’ mental condition, then develop and implement treatment plans based on clinical experience and knowledge
Act as a client advocate to coordinate required services or to resolve emergency problems in crisis situation

What does it take to become a licensed mental health counselor?

High school diploma or equivalent

College degree

What level? A Master’s or Doctoral degree in mental health counseling or related behavioral science field from an approved school related field.

Training/Supervised hours

How many hours? Minimum of 36 months of full-time counseling or 3,000 hours of postgraduate supervised experience in an approved setting.
